Buying juneberry plants

If you are going to grow juneberries, you have to plant them.  Before you plant them, you have to buy the plants!  But where should you buy them?

Juneberry plants are hard to find.  For the time being, there are very few nurseries that carry plant material.  When you are searching for plants, keep these tips in mind:

1) The plant we are talking about is called “juneberry” here in Upstate New York, but elsewhere it is called Saskatoon berry.  Same plant!

2) Make sure the botanical name of the species you are buying is Amelanchier alnifolia.  This species will provide the best production.  Another species of juneberry is Amelanchier canadensis.  This is an ornamental landscape plant that has edible berries, but fewer in quantity.

3) Buy named cultivars.  With cultivars, we know how they will grow, how well they fruit, how they taste, and even how vigorous they are likely to be.  Several juneberry / saskatoon cultivated varieties are suitable for the Northeast. Some examples:
